I recorded this video to show people how to use the relatively simple tagging function on Facebook. I also explain more in depth in the video some of the etiquette involved with tagging people and pages. This is a great introduction to the feature if you are unsure how to use it or are looking for a starting point on etiquette.
What would you like to see?
Do you have any Facebook related topics that you’d like to see a video of? Please let me know and I will try to include it in this series.
Mentioned in this video/post @Lifehacker and @Shonali
Love the fact that you used me as an example, Joe. And yes, you know me well. π
The one thing about tagging is that you can’t tag people unless they are already “friends” with you. This is one of the reason I’ve been accepting more friend requests that I used to, though I am careful to add them to one of the relevant lists I’ve created if I don’t know them too well (if I don’t know them at ALL, I don’t add them, period). You can also not tag companies or businesses unless you’ve “liked” their pages. I wasn’t sure about this, but just tried to do so with Lifehacker, because you mentioned them, and that’s how it works.
I do think it’s smart to use tagging with caution, though I do it more now than I used to. Still, as you know, not all my posts are tagged, though I do tend to tag a few people when I post my newest blog posts, to try to generate engagement, and I have seen that work. A couple of folk who tag very smartly, I think, are lindsaymallen and jgoldsborough .
Speaking of tagging, that’s another reason I like livefyre so much. It’s a great way to try to bring folk into the conversation.
@Shonali what an excellent point you bring up about only friends being able to be tagged. I will go back and add a notation about that to the video at the appropriate point. You use the feature very well, perhaps that is why I thought of you while recording the video. π
I will have to make sure I am following lindsaymallen and jgoldsborough because I am always looking for quality examples and personal recommendations.
I also love the livefyre comment system but I do wish it would work for iPad users. I’ve received a lot of Email comments from ginniedietrich that would otherwise added some discussion to my blog. She does a lot of her reading on the iPad (like I do) and can only comment on the non livefyre blogs.
Thanks for adding great value to the post!
Joe
@hackmanj @Shonali lindsaymallen livefyre ginniedietrich Liveyre is amazing as are all of you. Look forward to connecting, Joe.
Shonali, I actually learned a lot about tagging best practices by watching you. A yfew montsh ago, I would have thought tagging might be seen as kind of annoying. Like a virtual “hey, look at me.” But now I know taht isn’t the case at all. In fact, when Shonali or someone else does it, I am appreciative because I might have otherwise missed their content and they obviously think it’s relevant to me. If I trust and know you, tag away :).
@Shonali Hah, it would help if I spelled ginidietrich right, I am ripe with fodder for corrections for Gini. She is going to lash me for my lack of attention to detail again (read the instructions, Joe!) π
@JGoldsborough @Shonali I noticed how tactfully Shonali, Gini and dannybrown were with tagging around the time of the #prapalooza. I’ve used it judiciously over time. One area I really try to do it is to help people who are not very promotional with their own stuff.
@hackmanj You’re most welcome! The other thing I’d love to see livefyre do is find a way to integrate people’s blogs/last post into their comment, aka Commentluv. I think that would help them hugely.
@JGoldsborough That is very kind of you to say, thank you!
@hackmanj Hmm, the “threaded reply” feature doesn’t seem to be working in livefyre right now…, i.e. when I reply to a reply, it’s not nested in that thread, but shows up at the bottom of the comments. Or is that just how it works?
@Shonali livefyre that would indeed be a great feature maybe if we lobby jkretch and jmatthicks a bit we can encourage the addition of the “latest blog post” feature. That is the big thing I think that Commentluv has going for it. I was just telling ileane this morning that I have been pondering Commentluv.
@hackmanj shonali burke Joe, that is a great feature and it’s something that, along with a deeper nesting feature, is in our development plan.
I can’t say enough about how much we appreciate the members of our community and the amount of conversation and positive feedback we receive from all of you. You all ROCK. My only complaint is that people, especially joe hackman and @Shonali , keep liking danny brown and gini dietrich ‘s comments which then puts the pressure on jenna langer and I to keep up in the points race! π
Great guidance, Joe. When we released the social mention feature some people asked about the chance that it will increase spam tweets. Everyone that has used the tool has great etiquette and we haven’t seen any problems. I’m willing to put my phone number and email address right on my website because I trust people enough to use it wisely, just like tagging.
Btw, are you having problems commenting on an iPad? We haven’t seen any iPad problems, so any feedback is greatly appreciated.
@JMattHicks LOL, there is a points race, eh? Great, ANOTHER thing I have to try to keep track of. π Seriously, you and @jennalanger are doing a great job. And gotta thank dannybrown & gini dietrich in particular for showing us what a great comment system livefyre is.
@Shonali @jennalanger dannybrown gini dietrich livefyre Both Danny and Gini have done amazing things for and with Livefyre and we couldn’t be happier that you were able to find us through them. We look forward to seeing what awesome things YOU have up your sleeve π
@hackmanj @Shonali Just dropping by to confirm what @JMattHicks said, we will be adding the “recent blog post” feature soon. It’s something that danny brown has been begging us for for some time. And supposedly he’ll turn Livefyre back on when he has that π Punk.
@jkretch @JMattHicks That’s awesome!
@JMattHicks shonali burke joe hackman @Shonali danny brown gini dietrich jenna langer Yet another thing to look out for with Livefyre, the addictive gaming aspect of the point race. Lol. Well you got 2 points from us π
@jkretch @Shonali @JMattHicks danny brown I think Danny’s nudging will be well worth it, that really seems to be the key missing feature at this point.
@jennalanger excellent points Jenna about the trust factor, few seem to abuse this and those that do are policed out on their own. Of course I am sure you guys also have protection in place for this sort of thing as well if a user abuses the system.
Gini was the one who told me the iPad commenting doesn’t work. Maybe I need to try it myself. Hopefully she will come and weigh in, I’ve already tagged her so we’ll see π
I think it is great how this post about a tagging function in Facebook has become a great discussion about Livefyre.. you just never know, right?
@hackmanj @Shonali HA! The thing is that NO ONE spells my name correctly so I won’t give you a hard time about it. I see Shonali just got livefyre (YAY!) and I agree it does a great job of bringing people into the converation. But the good news is…I can now comment from my iPad!
@hackmanj @jennalanger It depends on the day, but the iPad commenting has gotten to be less of a problem.
@GiniDietrich @Shonali livefyre Awesome, I didn’t know it was working with the iPad now. I guess I will be doing more reading/commenting on it.
Love the tag etiquette post, esp in video format. I use the tag for highlighting client accomplishments and for connecting to PR business pages that I find most insightful or helpful at the moment, @GiniDietrich ‘s Arment Dietrich being one of them. I also liked your distinction between business page and the person behind the page…good advice. Will retweet now.
@GiniDietrich Darlin, I got livefyre FOUR DAYS AGO and specifically thanked you, btw (guilt trip alert). Someone’s got some reading to do…
@hackmanj shonali burke joe hackman @Shonali danny brown gini dietrich jenna langer Ha ha you ‘da man, Joe! π
@EricaAllison @GiniDietrich thanks Erica, I am glad the video format worked well for you. That’s a great point about highlighting client accomplishments, I will definitely consider that more going forward. Thanks for your comment and re-tweet, greatly appreciated. – Joe
@Shonali Uh. I know. That’s how I know. I just have done no commenting. I thought I’d do it on Saturday. Nope. Got a manicure instead.
@GiniDietrich LOL. I’m glad you got the manicure. You deserve it. And I’m no one to talk; I am SO behind on my reading…!
Joe, great video.
What are some do’s and don’ts in terms of tagging your competitors? Or posting on their pages, either as a person or as a page? Or do you discourage this?
@JoanStewart wow great question Joan. In general I think it is best to avoid this kind of activity. What would fall into a gray area is commenting on their blog or posts on their Facebook page. As long as you are being respectful not overly prolific and not criticizing this is fine. In some cases people who work for competitors are friendly and of course that would change these opinions somewhat.
Glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for your comment. Do you have a personal story involving a competitor that you’d like to share?
Thanks,
Joe
@hackmanj @JoanStewart I learned a long time ago from one of my mentors, Internet marketer Tom Antion, that you shouldn’t view your competitors as people who have their hands in your pockets. Rather, view them as potential joint venture partners.
On his advice, I have teamed up with more than two dozen “competitors.” We appear on each other’s webinars and teleseminars as guest experts and create products that we can both sell. We are members of each other’s affiliate programs. Several of these people have even come my confidantes as well as my friends.
P.S. I think I’m the exception to the rule, but I like it this way.
@JoanStewart I think what you’ve described is much more viable today than it has been in the past. The way business is done, there is great opportunity for partnership. The tools we use are very complimentary in this regard as well. You’ve given some great examples.
Joe, have you tried the new Facebook tagging feature, i.e. where you can tag someone in a comment? It seems to be hit and miss with me, but I’ve seen others use it.
@Shonali It’s hit or miss for me, too, but I do keep trying!
@Shonali I haven’t tried it yet, sounds like they are working out some bugs. I think it would be great for some situations once it works. π
Do you know of anyway to install LiveFyre on Blogger? I know they haven’t made it for Blogger yet, but how would you install it using the Custom Platform code?
@Gabriel Silva Jumping in here, @hackmanj , I know you won’t mind. π I’d ask @JMattHicks or @jennalanger .
@Shonali thanks for trying to help, but @jennalanger already got back to me about it. Thanks anyway! π
Facebook evolves from the moment it starts. Until now, the makers of Facebook still upgrade their perspectives in order to give the best for the users. And as of December 15, 2011, a Timeline is the new virtual space in which all the content of Facebook users will be organized and shown. Β In Timeline, there is the so called <a href=”http://www.fb-coverphoto.com”>Facebook Cover Photo</a> in every Facebook Profile. Replacing the Facebook Profile, in a Timeline the photos, videos and posts of any given user will be categorized according to the period of time in which they were uploaded or created.
