You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life. ~Winston Churchill

I planned a debate with Gini Dietrich and Danny Brown over polarizing blog posts and online enemies. While researching the episode I realized I agreed with Gini and Danny more than I had realized. I am sure one day I will get the opportunity to debate with them about something. In the discussion we addressed the concept of online enemies but more specifically how both guests as bloggers and netizens really feel about these issues. Both guests are very passionate and well intended, they did have different approaches but there were a few great take aways:
- Don’t be afraid to challenge ideas.
- Focus on the ideas you dislike not the purveyors of the ideas.
- Be willing to learn from discourse and change.
- It’s a good practice to notify those whose ideas your are challenging.
- It can really be a challenge to keep post comments “on the rails” (on topic) when challenging ideas. (Proceed with caution)

Fantastic interview with Danny and Gini. It gave perspective on how bloggers should deal with people who are hell bent on criticizing blog posts. There are those people who can leave a comment on a blog in a respectful, cordial manner and there are others who just are trying to pick a fight. Two big differences between the two types.
@MarkVB you make a good point here Mark, I guess there are people who are always ready for a fight. A lot of people blame the internet for it, but after observing some adults in very different real life situations I have to wonder. 🙂
I hate Donald Trump. I think he is a dick. But one thing I like about him. Jim Rome used to play the Rosie O’Donnell vs Donald Trump verbal scuffle. And Rosie threw a left jab at Donald. Donald called in the Air Force and dropped a nuke. I get like that in my blog posts sometimes (Like today!).
There is a difference between disagreeing and when someone or a group are truly disingenuous in a way that to me is unethical. Especially when I have proof of this. I go bat shit crazy LOL And I don’t hold back. And I am not sure if my readers are amused or shocked. But to me it is self policing. Marketing is the worst for spinning bullshit and people believing it. Especially since so many non-marketers are involved in social media and marketing (specifically small biz owners and professionals like real estate agents etc)
I have been on a mission to crush and destroy the social media bullshitters (Mashable, Likeable/Vitrue’s, and even some A-Listers). Why? Because it is fun. Nothing beats a good verbal street fight especially when the facts are on your side. Reminds me recently of when Jon Stewart was in one of his many fox news fights and Fox News wanted to prove they were fair and balanced. So they pulled out a story from 2005 and one from 2007 as proof. And Jon said…but it’s 2011. LOL
Can’t wait to listen in a few.

It sounds to me as if Howie’s occasional combativeness is part of his voice. There is something to be said for the voice of the blog. If you are by nature feisty, combative, or over the top, it’s likely that you will have a greater degree of tolerance for being over the top…. That being said, there are some absolute limits to appropriateness.
@HowieSPM I really wish you would be more direct Howie. Sometimes I don’t know how you feel. HAH. I get where you are coming from and I know conviction and confidence in one’s positions is important. I wish I could just slam dunk things sometimes, I get bogged down in the gray areas. There are simply put just too many examples that buck the trend, where the trend is the people who may be respected on a given topic.
Keep on keepin on, thanks for the comment. Did you listen yet? What did you think?
@bobledrew I went through a long feisty phase where I was always eager for a debate though I found over time that I naturally tend toward concensus building behavior. I do agree we have to draw the line somewhere, and be willing to apologize if we cross it occassionally. I think people like @HowieSPM cross what my boundaries are, but I can certainly understand them.
Thanks for your comment, it was great that you were able to participate on the Podcast.
Half way through. Really enjoying it.
I am not always aggro or confrontational. I have a few hot buttons and I think it is because anyone can publish anything for the most part. I am only fighting for accuracy.
Ad Week had an infographic on mobile. It said 85% of ALL children under 15 have a cell phone. There is just no way. I did the math. Just for laughs here. Serious laughs. If I eliminate all kids 0-3years leaving 4year olds as the first year having phones. And all of them had phones. That is only 80%! So how could anyone reprint that. In fact we need to include a significant number of 3 year old iphone toting hipsters to make 85%!
That is shit I get aggro about and why the trust factor for Ad people is below used car salespeople in surveys.
@HowieSPM ok, I can appreciate that especially the fact that you will take time to check facts. Objectivity is a good thing for sure. Business on many levels can just get so sleazy. Really annoying…
Glad you are enjoying the Podcast.
@livefyre thanks for sharing my post! Cheers! #gratitude #appreciation
