While analyzing two decades of data on the activities of 1,000 active seniors it was discovered that they were less likely to become frail. This is an interesting but not necessarily conclusive finding but I think if you had a choice being active would be the wise decision.
DNS Issues Affecting Websites and Email
8:24AM on Monday 1/11/2010
An issue with our hosting partners DNS services is causing intermittent Email outages for many of our hosting clients. We’ve been advised that they are aware of the issue and working to resolve it. No ETA has been provided.

We have confirmed through research, discussions with our hosting partner and testing that the DNS issues are much more widespread than we had anticipated. There is an event of some significance occurring this morning effecting a substantial number of domain names. Enom and other providers are being affected. We will update this post as soon as we have more information.

According to a number of people posting on Twitter with the #dnsmonday hashtag this issue is still affecting numerous domains. Enom has stated that they are working through the DDoS attack. As many large companies have learned a small number of hosts with the right tools can bring down very large service providers. It remains to be seen who the attackers are in this case, but that will be the next chapter of this story. I did note that namebargain.com (a subsidiary of register.com) was completely offline earlier this morning but seems to be back up now. Follow #dnsmonday on Twitter or check back here for more information. We will continue to update this article as more information becomes available.
11:29AM Monday 1/11/2010
Enom is now reporting that services are 100% restored. More details are likely to emerge throughout the day.
3:30PM Monday 1/11/2010
DDoS attacks on Enom and other Registrars are nothing new. According to a 2005 3Com white paper enom.com was attacked 15 days per month for each month January to August 2004. On August 9th, 2007 there was a high profile DoS attack that caused outages at Register.com. In 2009 there was an attack on 1/31/2009 that was of sufficient volume to deny access to dns services for about 8 hours. These are just some of the reports. Enom has a policy that they do not disclose specifics on the attacks, so it is unlikely that we will learn much more than what we already know. That said I believe that these may just be trial runs by persons testing to see how these companies running key parts of internet infrastructure respond to the events. Sort of the doorknob twist equivalent of cyber warfare. Of course since Enom is mum on the issue, we’ll be forced to speculate.

Winners Never Give Up Podcast
Today I watched part of the Arizona – Green Bay playoff game. I left to take my son outside to ride his bike and thought the game was a blowout. I noticed a friend had posted on my Facebook comment about the game that Green Bay was making a comeback so I turned the game back on. At that point I was riveted to the game, exchanging comments on Facebook as a very close game was decided in overtime. It reminded me how important in life and business it is to never give up. You will win and you will lose, learn from the mistakes and don’t let the victories make you complacent.
Radar Now Application for Android Phones
I love opening up the Android Marketplace on my Droid Phone and checking out the latest apps. This is a video of the Radar Now application for the Android Phone Operating system. I am using and demonstrating this app on my Verizon Droid Phone. It is a very useful app particularly if you are travelling and need access to some recent weather radar coverage. I wish I had this years ago when I did a lot of camping
3 Simple Steps to help Find a Job
I’ve had a number of conversations with friends who are facing job transitions, most of them unemployed. Through this process I’ve compiled 3 things that I have done and received extremely good feedback from my friends. The purpose of this article is simple, to share a formula that you can use to help friends (or yourself!) if a jobless situation occurs. If you’d rather just listen, I have a podcast at the bottom of this post.
Step #1 Information Gathering
I ask my friends about their situation, specifically:
- What kind of work do they do.
- What kind of work would they like to do.
- Where would they like to work.
I then use that information to make constructive suggestions based on my own personal experience and the activity within my network. I also make sure that I am very supportive of them to try to embolden them to drive hard to the finish line (find a job that they will love!).
Step #2 I know this person that….
I then look at my network and think about who I know that might be able to help them. I make virtual introductions usually via Email and offer to help facilitate a connection. I’ll follow that up with another communication in a week or two and ask if they were able to connect and if that person was able to help them. The top person on my list that I refer people to is my neighbor and friend JP McDermott. JP has done a lot of outreach with people that are in these transitional situations. JP has a career coaching column at examiner.com.
Step #3 Support
Being jobless during a bad economic time with high unemployment is not a happy place to be. Step 3 for me is simple, I do everything I can to be supportive of my friend who is searching. I write encouraging comments on blog or social media posts they make, I re-tweet some of their key tweets, or I just send little follow up messages to encourage them. Mind you this is emerging opportunity, I don’t setup a schedule and I don’t do this equally with all of my friends.
You can do this, anyone can do this. I know there are jobs out there sometimes it’s just about getting the right people together. The sooner these jobs are filled with the right candidate the more quickly that company and the employee can start building an economically viable relationship. The net result is we all win. I hope you find this useful, please share your stories and tips.
